The 1.8-meter telescope is a shared facility with the department of astronomy at Boston University. Prior to that the telescope was shared with Ohio State and Ohio Wesleyan Universities. The telescope was moved to Arizona from Ohio in 1961. Time on the telescope is scheduled by the Director of Lowell Observatory, following guidelines set forth in the agreement between Lowell and Boston University. The instrument is a Cassegrain reflector with properties listed below:

Primary Mirror focal length 7.64 meters (300.6 inches)
Normal effective focal length 32 meters (1260 inches)
Normal Cassegrain scale 6.45 arcsec per millimeter
Overall nominal f-ratio 17.5
Longitude 111° 32' 9.28"
Latitude +35° 5' 48.62"
